The Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification’s (MMERE) Water Resources Division is responsible for the function of ensuring that Solomon Islands is able to meet its international water related obligations under relevant treaties, conventions, programs and initiatives.

The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 ‘Ensure access to water and sanitation for all’ is a concern that falls under the functions of the Water Resources Division. This global standard aims to have all of its component targets met by the year 2030 in order to ensure that all people, including Solomon Islanders have access to clean and safe drinking water and sanitation by the year 2030. Concerns of SDG Goal 6 is filtered through the planning and policy making processes of the Solomon Islands Government through its National Development Strategy 2016-2035 and relevant government policies as well as through Ministry Plans and Policies such as the Water Resources Division’s (WRD) Annual Work Plans and Reports.
