Projects & Developments

The Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) is involved in a number of projects and development activities that aim to improve how the Ministry regulates the minerals, petroleum, energy and water resources sectors that the Ministry is responsible for regulating.

  • Community Engagement Project

    The Community Engagement Project is a mining governance programme related to the implementation of the National Minerals Policy. The project’s aim is to strengthen engagements with communities that are affected or are likely to be affected by mining related activities.

    These engagements involve informing communities on the intentions of the National Minerals Policy, regulatory reform in the mining sector and developments in the mining sector including the establishment of an independent centre that will support landowners and communities impacted by mining projects (currently known as Solomon Islands Minerals Advisory Centre (SIMAC).

    The project also includes the development of a Standard Operating Procedure for local-level stakeholder engagement and discussions of the latest draft Mining Bill.

    The specific goals of the Project are:

    1. Inform communities that the National Minerals Policy has been endorsed by Cabinet and seek any feedback on its implementation;
    2. Gather input into the Draft Mining Bill and advise local stakeholders of the process to submit formal feedback; and
    3. Seek input into the merits of and the design for Solomon Islands Minerals Advisory Centre.
